What We Do Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), a donor-supported foundation, invests for economic growth in south central and southeastern Minnesota, serving a 20-county region which includes 175 communities and one Native nation. SMIF’s key interests include entrepreneurship, early childhood development and community vitality. SMIF invests through grantmaking, lending, trainings and more. Our Mission Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation is a regional development and philanthropic organization that fosters economic and community vitality in 20 counties of southern Minnesota through a culture of collaboration and partnership. Early Childhood Development Investing In Our Youngest Generation We believe that investing in our youngest generation is the smartest long-term investment in the future of our region. SMIF invests over $1.5 million annually to support a variety of early childhood development projects and programs. We clearly see the connection between investing in our youngest children—to prepare them to be the workers, entrepreneurs, and leaders of tomorrow—to our vision of economic prosperity and community vitality in this region. Early Literacy Grants SMIF’s Early Literacy Grant program is designed to support early literacy efforts that enhance school readiness for children birth to age eight by providing children with books. The Early Literacy Grant program receives books through partnerships with Mankato-based publishing companies, Capstone and ABDO.
