Overview

The Simons Foundation's Science, Society and Culture division will fund up to two Centers of Excellence at HBCUs in mathematics, neuroscience, physics, and ecology and evolutionary biology. Each award provides up to $1.5 million a year for five years (up to $7.5 million total, inclusive of 20 percent indirect costs) to build research excellence and pathways for students into graduate STEM programs.

Letters of intent are due November 12, 2026 at 12 p.m. ET. Invited applicants submit a full application by February 9, 2027, and awards begin September 1, 2027.

Accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities as defined by the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Center director must be tenured faculty with a Ph.D. and recognized scholarship; each Center needs at least three faculty members, two graduate students and two postdoctoral researchers.
