Summary
The Shackleton Academic Scholarship Programme honors Sir Ernest Shackleton's legacy by supporting graduates conducting research in the natural, physical, or social sciences in the Falkland Islands or South Georgia. Annually, awards of up to £4,000 are available to cover travel expenses, course fees, and equipment costs, but not salaries. This initiative aims to foster human endeavor and stimulate research in these unique regions, contributing to the ongoing development of the Falkland Islands.Overview
Sir Ernest Shackleton was an outstanding leader in the golden age of Antarctic exploration at the dawn of the twentieth century. His astonishing feats of leadership, navigation, endurance and survival have recently inspired a revival of interest in Britain, the United States and elsewhere in the world. His son Edward, Lord Shackleton, began as an explorer who won acclaim as a scientist, businessman, wartime Royal Air Force officer, statesman and author of two reports for the British Government which laid the foundation for the Falkland Islands' development and prosperity. The Shackleton name has played a vital role in the history and growth of the Falkland Islands, therefore the Shackleton Scholarship Fund was set up in 1995 to commemorate these two remarkable men and to stimulate human endeavour, initiative and research. Academic Scholarship Programme Academic Scholarships are for graduates from, or to visit the Falkland Islands or South Georgia to undertake research into the natural, physical or social sciences. Awards of up to about £4,000 are made annually, and can be used to cover scholar travel expenses (to and within the Islands), course fees, equipment or analytical costs – but can not be used to cover salaries. When calculating your project budget and if including a request to cover travel expenses to the Falklands, please note that SSF scholars will usually be allowed to purchase tickets at the reduced Falkland Islands 'resident' fare of approx. £1,600 each (return ticket) if travelling via the MOD flight from Brize Norton.Eligibility
