Purpose: Provide unrestricted, one-year investments to BIPOC-led organizations, representing a shift toward more equitable funding practices in philanthropy.

Geographic Scope: Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region, Michigan

Target Organizations:

BIPOC-led nonprofit organizations

Organizations identified through community conversations and the Catalyzing Community Giving (CCG) partnership

Program Philosophy:

Trust-based, relationship-based approach to grantmaking

One-year, unrestricted investments

Recognizes BIPOC organizations as experts in their communities

Addresses historical inequities in philanthropic funding that favor large, white-led social services agencies

Prioritizes transparency, support, wellbeing, and shared accountability

Example Recipient: Black Wall Street Kalamazoo (supports and mentors Black-owned businesses)

Future Vision: United Way BCKR plans to expand this trust-based, relationship-based approach into their entire grantmaking process as part of Community Impact redesign.
