Seeding Grants

Status: Pilot program completed in 2022

Purpose: Provide unrestricted, one-year investments to BIPOC-led organizations, representing a shift toward more equitable funding practices in philanthropy.

Geographic Scope: Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region, Michigan

Target Organizations:

  • BIPOC-led nonprofit organizations

  • Organizations identified through community conversations and the Catalyzing Community Giving (CCG) partnership
  • Program Philosophy:

  • Trust-based, relationship-based approach to grantmaking

  • One-year, unrestricted investments

  • Recognizes BIPOC organizations as experts in their communities

  • Addresses historical inequities in philanthropic funding that favor large, white-led social services agencies

  • Prioritizes transparency, support, wellbeing, and shared accountability
  • Number of Grants: 6 organizations received grants (pilot program)

    Example Recipient: Black Wall Street Kalamazoo (supports and mentors Black-owned businesses)

    Future Vision: United Way BCKR plans to expand this trust-based, relationship-based approach into their entire grantmaking process as part of Community Impact redesign.
