Summary

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is launching the School Resource Officer Incentive Grant Program to fund and sustain School Resource Officer positions. This initiative aims to foster stronger partnerships between local law enforcement and schools, enhancing safety and security in Virginia's public schools. Eligible local governments can apply for these grants, ensuring that certified law enforcement officers support the educational environment effectively.

Overview

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is offering a new cycle of state grants to continue funding and establish new funding for School Resource Officer (SRO) positions to establish, enhance, and continue the partnerships between local law enforcement agencies and school divisions. A “School Resource Officer” means a certified law enforcement officer hired by a local law enforcement agency to provide law enforcement and security services to Virginia public schools. An SRO may be a full-time or part-time employee of a law enforcement agency. Units of local government are eligible to apply for and receive these funds. A police department or sheriff’s office will manage an SRO position; however, the grant application must be submitted by, and the funds awarded to, a local unit of government.
