Programs for Children
The Mission: Eliminate childhood hunger in Southwest Texas
1 in 5 Children Face Food Insecurity
Food insecurity is a threat casting a shadow over the daily lives of one-in-five children across San Antonio, hindering their sleep, focus, and overall well-being. The far-reaching consequences of hunger goes beyond the absence of food and has profound implications for a child’s physical health, mental well-being, and overall development.
In response to the ongoing struggle against childhood hunger, the San Antonio Food Bank implements vital programs like Kids Café (CACFP) and the Summer Feeding Program (SFSP). By collaborating with local community centers, schools, churches, volunteers, and non-profits, the programs strive to alleviate the challenges faced by at-risk children in the community. Additionally, our Back Pack Program partners with schools, providing weekend snack packs to children at risk of hunger during weekends or holidays. No child should go to bed hungry, or ever wonder where there next meal is coming from. These efforts reflect our commitment to addressing the profound impact of childhood hunger on the lives of vulnerable children.
Kids Cafe
Kids Café is a nationwide program confronting childhood hunger by serving as a direct feeding partnership between area Food Banks and an after-school programs.
Our Kids Cafés provides at-risk children 18 and under with a safe place to meet and mingle after school, throughout the school year.
Any child that visits one of our Kids Cafés will receive a free fresh nutritious meal and or snack. Our Kids Café sites provide enrichment activities and physical activities that promote the practice of healthy eating and the importance of staying active.
How does a Kids Café come to be?
A Kids Café is a partnership between a Food Bank and a non-profit that has established youth programs. The Food Bank provides the meal component to enhance existing activities. Rather than children getting crackers and powered drink mix as a snack—or no snack at all—Kids Café meals and snacks are provided as nutritious, filling alternatives.
The San Antonio Food Bank seeks new Kids Café locations based on a program’s viability, need in the community, and a reputation for safe, and reliable program operation.
Summer Food Service
Our Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) aims to fill the summer meal gap by providing no-cost nutritious meals, groceries, and snacks for children over the summer.
Helping Kids Eat Great, Play Great
More than 200,000 students living in low-income households in the San Antonio area rely on school meal programs for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. With most students eating breakfast and lunch at school, summer break presents significant challenges for families in need.
Our Summer Meals For Kids campaign aims to fill the summer meal gap by providing no-cost nutritious meals, groceries, and snacks for children over the summer. When kids eat great, they can play great!
