Overview

Safe Sports School Award

Status: Application pause in effect; reopening anticipated July 2026

Geographic Scope: Secondary schools around the United States

Program Overview:
The Safe Sports School Award recognizes secondary schools that take crucial steps to keep their athletes free from injuries. Schools can earn a First Team Award (all recommended and required elements) or Second Team Award (required elements only).

What Schools Must Demonstrate:

  • Create a positive athletic health care administrative system

  • Provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations

  • Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities

  • Plan for selection, fit, function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment

  • Provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes

  • Develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions

  • Provide or facilitate injury intervention

  • Create and rehearse venue-specific emergency action plans

  • Provide or facilitate psycho-social consultation and nutritional counseling/education

  • Educate athletes and parents of potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities
  • Eligibility:

  • Any secondary school can apply

  • Individual application required for each school

  • Applications must be in the school's name, not the school district

  • Renewing schools can only renew within 60 days before award expiration
  • Award Details:

  • Cost: $150 (as of July 1, 2025)

  • Processing time: Up to six weeks

  • Each recipient receives one banner

  • Additional banners available at school's expense
  • Program Notes:

  • No bulk pricing discounts as of 2024

  • Grant payments are reimbursed (not accepted ahead of application process)

  • Invoices must be paid within three months of award notification

  • Paper applications not accepted

  • All submissions through online portal only

    Application Process

    Submission Requirements:
    1. Submit through online portal only (paper applications will not be accepted)
    2. Applications must be in the school's name, not the school district name
    3. Individual application required for each school
    4. Renewing schools can only renew within 60 days before award expiration

    Timeline:

  • Processing time: Approximately six weeks

  • Last applications accepted before pause: February 1, 2026 (11:59 p.m. CST)

  • Reopening expected: July 2026

  • Invoices must be paid within three months of award notification or application will close
  • Materials Needed:

  • Complete dossier demonstrating adherence to the 10 required elements

  • Payment of $150 application fee

  • Evidence of implementation of safety standards
