Overview: A collaborative program between Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) and The Glaucoma Foundation that supports early-career vision researchers transitioning from their first to second NIH R01 grant.

Target Researchers: Early- to mid-career vision researchers (typically Assistant Professors) who:

  • Have already received their first independent federal grant (NIH R01)

  • Are collecting new data to apply for a second R01

  • Have a primary appointment in a department of ophthalmology or any relevant department
  • Focus Area: Glaucoma research, specifically on:

  • Degeneration of human retinal ganglion cells (with openness to connectomic, genetic, imaging, and epidemiologic approaches)

  • Regeneration approaches for glaucoma research
  • Purpose: Fill the critical gap in funding for the challenging transition from first R01 to second R01, ensuring a healthy pipeline of vision science research.

    Eligibility:

  • Assistant Professors (MDs, PhDs, or MD/PhDs)

  • Primary appointment in ophthalmology or relevant department

  • From any institution of higher education in the United States

  • Must have first NIH R01 award and be developing preliminary data for second R01
