Focusing on a small group of clearly defined program areas allows us to invest for the long-term and develop strategies for contributing to lasting change.

Within each focus area we identify organizations that match the Foundation’s objectives and have developed a clear path to achieving excellent results. Whether it’s a small project with some risk or a large, well-established organization, we view the work as a partnership, which enables us to build meaningful relationships with an organization’s board and staff. This relationship-based approach allows us to offer many forms of support — not just financial — and to solicit feedback from our grantees and from voices in the communities where we serve.

* College Access and Success
* The Foundation supports organizations that broaden access to and improve success in higher education for students from low income families. We fund college preparation and retention programs as well as policy initiatives that eliminate systemic barriers to help students, often the first in their families, gain admission to and complete college.
* Health
* Diabetes & Obesity Prevention, Land Use & Parks
* We work with organizations that enhance community health through smart land use, park development, policy work and community engagement in under-resourced neighborhoods — all with the goal of increasing physical activity to combat type 2 diabetes and obesity.
* Alzheimer’s Disease
* We support research efforts of early-career scientists who are investigating Alzheimer’s disease causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatments. Recognizing the challenges of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, the Foundation also funds organizations that provide innovative and creative supports for family caregivers.
* Israel
* In Israel the Foundation is focused on education/college access as well as economic/workforce development to help disadvantaged communities improve their lives both economically and socially. To strengthen all of Israel, the Foundation recognizes the need to support all populations, including secular and Orthodox Jews, Ethiopian-Israelis, Christians, Arabs and Bedouins.
* Arts Education
* Extending Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert’s deep connection to the arts, the Foundation supports education and outreach programs at museums, community-based organizations, schools and media outlets. The programs increase equal access to the arts and expose under-served students to dance, drama, music and visual arts, helping them to develop an appreciation for the arts as well as academic and life skills in school and in their personal and social lives.
* Jewish Life
* Building on the interests of Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert, the Foundation supports core organizations in the Los Angeles Jewish community that cultivate tolerance, Jewish culture and education. In addition, we support innovative organizations addressing the needs of the next generation of young adults looking for alternative ways of creating Jewish life and identity. Though many of the programs educate and respond to the needs of both Jews and non-Jews, the organizations base their work on the Jewish tenet of repairing the world through social action.
* UC Berkeley and UCLA
* The Foundation supports a variety of academic programs at UC Berkeley and UCLA in addition to endowed Chairs and research projects that intersect with our objectives and long-term strategy.
* Special Projects
* From time to time we discover important projects that are aligned with the Foundation’s priorities but may not fit into our primary focus areas.
