Overview

Research Grants

Focus Areas: Tuberculosis (TB) research and clinical care projects. Occasionally funds grants related to other chronic lung diseases.

    Funding Preferences

  • Projects directly related to tuberculosis
  • New or pilot projects needing seed money (rather than ongoing program funding)
  • Research projects focusing primarily on clinical care and outcomes rather than basic science
  • Projects that focus on medically underserved and/or economically disadvantaged populations
  • Equipment relevant to respiratory assessment, respiratory care, prevention of respiratory disease, or maintenance of respiratory health (e.g., spirometers, oximeters, or similar devices)
  • Projects with substantial presence in Western Washington
  • Projects with relatively modest budgets (most awarded grants range from $500 to $20,000)
  • Projects realistically completed within one to two years of funding (most grants funded for single year)
  • Projects with established human subjects review approval
  • Projects with little chance of alternative source of funding

    Funding Restrictions

  • Generally does NOT fund ongoing salary support
  • Exceptions to salary restriction:
  • - Wages for essential research staff - Stipends for subjects participating in research trials - Fellowship funding for education and training related to TB research or clinical care
  • Does NOT pay institutional overhead costs (indirect costs)

    Eligibility

  • Non-profit organizations and 501(c)(3) organizations
  • NOT awarded to individuals (except Cedric Northrop and Graduate Pulmonary Nursing Fellowships)
  • Projects require established human subjects review approval

    Application Timeline

  • LOI Deadline: February 28th
  • Application Deadline: March 31st
  • Review by Grants Committee: mid-April
  • Board approval: early May
  • Award letters sent: by June 1st
  • Funding start date: July 1st (contingent on Human Subjects Approval for clinical research studies)

How to Apply

Application Process

1. Step 1: Letter of Intent (LOI)
- Complete LOI form via online Grant Management Site
- Form requires: project objectives, goals, scope, and basic budget information
- Deadline: February 28th
- Firland acknowledges receipt within one week by email and assigns a grant number
- Applicant must refer to grant number in all future correspondence

2. Step 2: Grant Application
- Upon LOI acceptance, applicant receives invitation to complete online grant application
- Applicant provided with account name and password for application form
- Deadline: March 31st
- Note: Grants received at other times may be reviewed on individual case basis

3. Step 3: Review and Award
- Grants Committee reviews in mid-April
- Board of Directors approves in early May
- Award letters sent by June 1st
- Anticipated funding start date: July 1st (contingent on Human Subjects Approval for clinical research studies)
- Recipients may need to accept grant conditions via online form as detailed in award letter

    Additional Notes

  • Multi-year grants are eligible
  • Organizations with previous Firland grants still must submit LOI
  • No-cost extensions available; progress reports due June 30th each year
  • Supplemental funding available only after all previous projects completed and final reports submitted
  • Log into grants portal to check application status
  • Indirect/overhead costs are NOT allowed
