Please note: The Research Foundation of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons will not accept proposals submitted after the deadline. The primary mission of the Research Foundation of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons is to raise and award funds to support research and educational programs related to colon and rectal diseases. Over more than twenty years, the Research Foundation has awarded over $6 million to colorectal surgeons and researchers to investigate a broad spectrum of colorectal diseases and to develop novel surgical techniques pertinent to the care of colorectal patients. Your donations support research and educational programs related to colon and rectal disease. The Career Development Award (CDA) provides young surgeons with the support necessary for the initiation and development of an academic career in colorectal surgery. The CDA focuses on career development and mentorship of the individual rather than solely on the research proposal. The award is intended for the academic investigator demonstrating significant creativity in research relevant to the pathophysiology or management of diseases of the colon, rectum, anus or small bowel. Funding $75,000 per year for 2 years. Second year of funding is dependent on satisfactory review of renewal request submitted 9 months after start of initial funding period. CDA may be used for supplies and salary support.CDA may not be used for overhead.

Eligibility

You can learn more about this opportunity by visiting the funder's website. The Career Development Award (CDA) is intended for early career investigators. Applicants should be full-time faculty members, preferably at the assistant professor level, in a United States or Canadian government, public, or private, not-for-profit medical institution.Applicants must be within 5 years of starting their first faculty position on the date the grant is submitted (e.g., start date as faculty needs to be 5 years before day the grant is due to the Research Foundation of the ASCRS). Applicants are welcome to resubmit a new or revised application within five years of starting their first faculty position OR within 12 months of the first submission if their initial submission was unsuccessful.Extensions up to two years (increasing eligibility period to 7 years total) will be considered if personal or family situations such as parental leave, childcare, elder care, medical conditions, or a disability delay readiness for applying for CDA. To be considered for accommodation, we ask the applicant to write to the Research Foundation of the ASCRS to discuss the individual situation before applying. The requests will be reviewed by the Research Committee Chair and Research Foundation President.ASCRS members only.Grant can support up to 10% of the of the NIH Cap salary ($221,900, Jan. 1 - Sept. 30, 2024). Applications should also include a letter of support from the department of surgery chair confirming at least 25% non-clinical time will be committed to the applicant. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member.

Ineligibility

Applicant must not currently have or have previously received a career development award from another external funding source. If the applicant receives the Career Development Award from the Research Foundation of the ASCRS and is subsequently awarded another career development award from another external funding source with overlapping funding period, the applicant must return the residual funds to the Research Foundation of the ASCRS, or decline the funding from another source. The exception is a career development award from the NIH K-series award or funding from the applicants own institution.
