Research Fellowship

Funder: Arizona Historical Society

Geographic Scope: Arizona, the Southwest, and northern Mexico

Purpose: Awards short-term research fellowships to visiting scholars to advance the study of Arizona history, the Southwest, and northern Mexico, and to promote creation of high-quality secondary source materials with high probability of publication in scholarly journals, particularly the Journal of Arizona History.

    Eligibility

  • Open to: Academics, graduate students, and independent researchers
  • Priority given to: Doctoral dissertation applicants and postdoctoral level scholars
  • International scholars: Welcomed but must have a Social Security Number (SSN) or US Tax ID Number (TIN)
  • Project types: History, government, legal/public policy, or the arts
  • Preference: Projects with high probability of publication in the Journal of Arizona History or other scholarly journals
  • Public history projects: Welcome, but research must eventually result in publishable scholarly work

    Award Details

  • Amount: $500 - $2,000 per project
  • Duration: 1-3 weeks of residency in Arizona
  • Use: Intended to defray travel and living expenses
  • Restrictions: Funds not intended to pay for AHS services like image reproduction or licensing

    Requirements

  • Awardees must submit 2-3 page report on research experience
  • Required engagement with AHS public audience (social media, presentations, or other means)
  • Preference given to applicants who spend most time at AHS archives, but applications accepted for researchers using other state archives
