SHSI Iowa History Dissertation Fellowship Grant

The SHSI Iowa History Dissertation Fellowship supports advanced graduate students engaging in research related to Iowa history. Open to both U.S. and international applicants, the fellowship encourages innovative proposals that explore overlooked topics or new perspectives on established ones. Awardees can receive up to $1,500 and will present their findings at a workshop in Des Moines, fostering collaboration and discussion among fellows and experts in the field.

Apply for an Iowa History Dissertation Fellowship from the State Historical Society of Iowa to support historical research on a topic related to Iowa history. Fellowships are available to advanced graduate students working on dissertations that engage any aspect of Iowa history in any time period, including pre-statehood up through the recent past. Dissertations do not need to focus exclusively on Iowa history but should demonstrate substantial engagement with Iowa history.
At the conclusion of the fellowship, fellows will meet in Des Moines and present their work in a workshop that will include other fellows, State Historical Society of Iowa staff, and an invited commenter.
Amount
Awardees will receive up to $1,500.

Eligibility

Graduate students writing dissertations that engage with the history of Iowa are eligible. Applications are welcomed from U.S. and international applicants. International applicants must possess either a valid Social Security Number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
