Recreational Trails Program (NE) The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) in Nebraska is part of a federal grant program that provides funding to states to develop and maintain recreational trails or to purchase, lease, or rent equipment for trails for a variety of activities, such as hiking, biking, horseback riding and off-road vehicle use. The program is managed at the federal level by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and administered by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for projects within Nebraska. Eligible Projects Maintenance and restoration of existing trailsDevelopment and rehabilitation of trailside and trailhead facilities and trail linkages for recreational trailsPurchase and lease of recreational trail construction and maintenance equipmentConstruction of new recreational trailsAcquisition of easements and fee simple title property for recreational trails or for recreational trail corridorsAssessment of trail conditions for accessibility and maintenanceEducational projectsAdministration of program Funding The minimum grant requirement is $50,000 and the maximum grant amount that can be requested is $250,000 for projects. The minimum or maximum grant amount request can be waived for applications if requested via letter, which includes justification as to why they are requesting the waiver. The Committee will determine if the waiver request is justifiable. The RTP applicant must provide 20% of the overall costs of the project. The match cannot be raised after the grant is approved.
