Overview

Queenan Global Health Awards

Overview: The Queenan Global Health Awards were established in 2014 in honor of Dr. John T. Queenan. This program aims to train current and future leaders in perinatal health to partner in advancing obstetrics in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) around the globe, where a disproportionate burden of adverse outcomes occurs.

Eligibility:

  • Current SMFM Fellows, Associate Members, and Regular Members

  • Most funding opportunities require U.S. citizenship (except Travel Award)

  • Travel Award available to practicing obstetricians from LMICs who are authors of abstracts submitted to SMFM Pregnancy Meeting
  • Award Details:

  • Recipients: Up to 4 awardees per cycle

  • Application Deadline: September 22
  • Pre-Departure Requirements:

  • Before departure, awardees must attend a travel medicine clinic

  • Must procure evacuation insurance

  • Award funds may be used to defray these expenses

  • Awardees must confirm with medical insurance providers whether additional insurance is required for overseas travel
  • Program Flexibility:

  • Committee willing to consider options for less flexible programs (e.g., time away restrictions)

  • Committed to allowing maximum flexibility possible
  • Fellowship Opportunities

    1. International Agency Mentored Research Fellowship (Geneva-based agency)

  • Amount: Up to $15,000

  • Description: Hybrid mentorship conducted virtually and in person. The 6-month stay in Geneva is no longer a requirement.

  • Eligibility: SMFM Fellows, Associate Members, and Regular Members (U.S. citizens required)
  • 2. Seed Funding for Investigator-Initiated Research Project

  • Amount: Up to $15,000

  • Description: Support for investigator-initiated research projects in LMICs

  • Eligibility: SMFM Fellows, Associate Members, and Regular Members (U.S. citizens required)
  • 3. Visiting Teaching Fellowship

  • Amount: Up to $5,000

  • Description: Teaching fellowships at partner institutions in LMICs

  • Eligibility: SMFM Fellows, Associate Members, and Regular Members (U.S. citizens required)

  • Appendix: Potential sites list available
  • 4. Travel Award

  • Description: Reimbursement for travel and lodging to attend the SMFM Pregnancy Meeting

  • Eligibility: Practicing obstetricians from LMICs who are authors (first author preferred, co-authors eligible) of abstracts submitted to SMFM Pregnancy Meeting

  • Restrictions: Award not given to authors from high-income countries or abstracts without actively participating authors from LMICs

  • Application: No application required
  • Geographic Scope: Low- and middle-income countries globally
