Last Updated: February 12, 2025

Summary

The Polio Research Committee (PRC) seeks innovative research proposals to advance the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's objectives. Since its inception in 2008, the PRC has prioritized projects in vaccine immunogenicity, surveillance methods, product development, and epidemiology. Funded studies will address key challenges in polio eradication, including assessing the effects of halting oral poliovirus vaccines and exploring new IPV formulations. This initiative invites multidisciplinary approaches to generate impactful solutions in polio research.

Overview

Polio Research Committee (PRC) The Polio Research Committee (PRC) was established in 2008 to provide guidance and make recommendations on the strategic direction of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s (GPEI) research program. To achieve this objective, the Committee publicizes research priorities, reviews research proposals, and recommends selected projects that will significantly contribute to the program to be funded by the International PolioPlus Committee of Rotary International. We are looking for well-articulated proposals that propose research projects that will contribute significantly to polio eradication. The PRC funds a variety of studies from many disciplines including basic science research, operational research, mathematical modeling projects, and epidemiological studies/clinical studies. The current priority of the Polio Research Committee is to generate new data or information in the following areas: Vaccine schedule immunogenicity: Immunogenicity of poliovirus vaccination options after withdrawal of all oral poliovirus vaccinesSurveillance: Assessment of length of poliovirus environmental circulation after withdrawal of all oral poliovirus vaccines. Development and evaluation of new methods for poliovirus surveillance in areas with poor accessProduct development: Development and evaluation of innovative IPV formulations or administration techniques (new mucosal adjuvants, virus-like particle [VLPs] vaccine, IPV patches, etc.)Epidemiology/virology:Evaluation of factors favouring emergence of vaccine derived poliovirusesMonitoring & evaluation:Development and evaluation of new methods for assessment of quality (& coverage) of polio vaccination mass campaignsBasic immunology: Assessment of length of priming following IPV administrationContainment: Research supporting containment objectives and policies
