Plains Exchange
Status: Inaugural program launched Summer 2023
Geographic Scope: Tulsa, Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas (Springdale/Fayetteville area)
What is it? A platform created by Tulsa-based artist Shane Darwent to foster creativity, collaboration, and audience sharing between Southern Plains and Western Ozark artists. Each exchange collapses boundaries between regions' creative communities and expands networks for each artist.
Program Structure: One-to-one artist exchanges facilitated between Tulsa and Northwest Arkansas
Inaugural Summer 2023 Exchange:
- Artist: Antonio Andrews, aka "Dial Tone" from Tulsa's Northside
- Background: Founder of No Parking Studios (2016), a creative company supporting multiple mediums including music, visual art, and film
- Residency Location: The Medium in Springdale, Arkansas
- Duration: June 18 – July 1
- Activities: Studio visits, museum tours, local field excursions, community integration
Antonio Andrews (Tulsa)
- Artist: Aaron Turner, photographer and educator based in Arkansas
- Background: Uses photography to explore ideas of home and resilience in Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas; specializes in 4×5 view camera work on identity, history, and abstraction
- Previous Fellowships/Awards: 2018 Light Work Artists-in-Residence (Syracuse University), 2019 EnFoco Photography Fellow, 2020 Visual Studies Workshop Project Space Artists-in-Residence, 2020 Artist 360 Mid-America Arts Alliance Grant Recipient, 2021 Houston Center for Photography Fellowship, 2021 Creators Lab Photo Fund (Google/Aperture Foundation), 2022 Darryl Chappell Foundation photographer-in-residence (Ogden Museum of Southern Art)
