Overview

Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant

Overview: A major unrestricted grant awarded annually to support individual visual artists in their artistic development and career growth. One of the country's largest unrestricted grants to an individual artist.

Geographic Scope: Seacoast region (primarily New Hampshire, with some Maine recipients)

Eligibility:

  • Visual artists living and working in the Piscataqua region

  • Applicants from various media including painting, textiles, photography, mixed media, sculpture, installation art, digital media, and other visual art forms
  • Award Structure:

  • Primary Grant: Up to $25,000 for the main recipient

  • Finalist Grants: $1,500 each for finalists (two finalists typically selected)
  • Funding Source: Artist Advancement Initiative Fund created by Seacoast philanthropist Tom Haas and his family, subsequently added to by the Joan Dwyer and Jayne Dwyer Charitable Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation

    Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrates artistic vision

  • Clear plan for using grant to advance artistic development and career growth

  • Supports artistic growth, career advancement, and cultural enrichment of the region
  • Program History: First grant awarded in spring 2002. Over a dozen artists have been supported through the program.

    Selection Process: Two independent juries review submitted artwork and artist plans
