NYSCA/New York Folklore Folk Arts Graduate Internship Program

Funder: New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) in partnership with New York Folklore

Geographic Scope: New York State

Overview: A paid internship opportunity for graduate students in folklore to learn about public folk arts programming and field research while completing a project that benefits both the host organization and the folklorist intern.

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral graduate folklore program

  • Folklorists who graduated from a graduate folklore program within the past two years

  • Must have a driver's license and access to an automobile
  • Award Details:

  • Stipend: $5,000

  • Duration: 8 weeks, 30-35 hours per week (typically late May through August)

  • Location: Host organization provides dedicated office space and assists with housing arrangements
  • Program Requirements:

  • Interns undertake a special project linked to their graduate learning program that benefits the host organization

  • Following internship completion, both intern and host organization must submit evaluation reports

    Application Process

    1. Required Materials:
    - Resume or CV
    - Letter describing potential benefits of the internship for applicant's career goals as a public folklorist
    - For current graduate students: reflect on internship's relationship to graduate learning program
    - Indicate how previous experiences in programming, field research, and/or administration would contribute to host organization

    2. Submission:

    - Do not contact host organization directly for internship information

    3. Deadline: Applications must be received by midnight on the deadline date (varies by year; check website for current year)

    4. Decision Timeline: Decisions announced approximately 2 weeks after deadline

    5. Post-Internship: Both intern and host organization required to submit evaluation report
