Northrop-Park Fellowship

Status: As of 2017, the Firland Foundation is NOT accepting applications for the Northrop-Park Fellowship. Confirm current status before applying.

Purpose: Tuberculosis (TB) research training fellowship within the University of Washington Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program.

    Fellowship Details

  • Career Focus: Support training of fellows in tuberculosis research methodologies as a form of career development award
  • Goal: Provide fellows with opportunity to develop independent faculty-level tuberculosis research funding
  • Award Structure: Only one fellowship awarded each year
  • Duration: A Cedric Northrop Fellow may be awarded up to 3 years of funding if there is evidence of sufficient progress and promise on annual progress reports

    Namesake

    Named in honor of:
  • Dr. Cedric Northrop: TB Controller for King County and Washington State TB Controller; instrumental in establishing quarantine and detention regulations for uncooperative TB patients in late 1940s
  • Dr. David R. Park III: Former pulmonary and critical care physician at Harborview Medical Center; Professor of Medicine at University of Washington; co-founder of Firland Northwest TB Center; Firland Foundation Board Member and Chair of Grants Committee

    From 1993-2016, fellows conducted research in areas including:
  • TB infection epidemiology and diagnostic tests
  • Pediatric TB (autophagy, ULK-1)
  • Host immune responses to TB
  • Drug-resistant TB management
  • TB vaccine development
  • COPD research
  • Sleep medicine
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension

How to Apply

Application Process

1. Step 1: Letter of Intent (LOI)
- Submit LOI application via online form
- If approved, applicant receives unique link to complete application within a few days

2. Step 2: Fellowship Application
- Complete full Northrop-Park Fellowship Application via provided link
- Deadline: March 31st
- Review Date: Applications reviewed by Grants Committee in mid-April; approved by Board of Directors in early May

3. Step 3: Award
- Award letters sent by June 1st
- Anticipated funding start date: July 1st
