The Wildfire Prevention Grant Program by the California San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy aims to mitigate the impact of wildfires exacerbated by climate change. This program supports projects that enhance forest health, promote sustainable land use, and develop community resilience. Funding ranges from $300,000 to $2,000,000, focusing on strategic fire prevention planning and management in vulnerable areas, particularly the San Gabriel Mountains and urban wildlife corridors.Overview
NOTE: Pre-Proposal - This deadline represents when the Concept Proposal is due.Full Proposal - Invite Only Non-Bond Priorities Grant Programs In certain years, the annual state budget has allocated General Funds directly to the RMC. These funds have been incorporated into the Non-Bond Priority Grant Program. Wildfire Prevention Grant Program (CA) Wildfires are part of California’s natural landscape; however, drought and climate change conditions have increased wildfire frequency, size, and severity in recent years, extending California’s Wildfire season. Historical fire perimeters within RMC’s territory show that many sections of the San Gabriel Mountains and foothills have burned repeatedly within the last few decades, with some sections having burned multiple times. To increase the region’s resiliency to wildfire, funded projects should advance the California’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan: A Comprehensive Strategy , with a focus on hazardous fuels clearance, post-fire restoration, work force development, and environmental education to increase the region’s resiliency to wildfire. Priorities for RMC Wildfire Prevention Grant Program: Protect and expand native forests/wildlands;Support communities in increasing their resilience to wildfire and improving fire safety;Promote sustainable land use;Promote investment in wildlands management and workforce development;Protect cultural resources vulnerable to wildfire. Funding for projects will fall under three main categories: San Gabriel Mountains and Foothills Fire Prevention Planning and Management: Projects under this category will serve mainly the San Gabriel Mountains and Foothills. Work may include invasive species management and fuel break maintenance in the Angeles National Forest, fuel modification of open spaces in foothill communities, or protection of tribal cultural resources from fire impacts. Urban Wildlands and Hills Fire Prevention Planning and Management: Projects under this category will serve mainly the San Jose, San Rafael, Montebello, Puente, Chino, and Coyote Hills, which are urban wildlife corridors surrounded by urban development. Work may include fire prevention planning, fuel load reduction, invasive species management, and maintenance of defensible space. Forest Health: Fire Recovery, Response, Restoration, Education and Stewardship: Projects under this category will cover all regions in the Mountains, Hills, and Foothills. Work will improve forest health through a variety of actions with co-fire prevention benefits including native habitat revegetation, infrastructure improvements, and public stewardship building. Funding RMC typically awards grant funds with a budget range between $300,000 - $2,000,000.Eligibility
