NCNPS Awards Program

Status: Active annual program

Geographic Scope: North Carolina

Program Description: Annual awards program recognizing individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the NC Native Plant Society and to the cause of native plant and habitat conservation. Awards are presented at the annual NCNPS meeting in June.

Award Categories - Part I (NCNPS Members Only):

    President's Award for Service to the Society

  • Recognizes superior efforts of an individual to further the mission and purpose of the Society

    William Lanier Hunt Award for Environmental Education

  • Recognizes an individual for superior efforts in education related to native plants
  • Eligible areas: public education (teaching), programs to the general public, writing, research

    B. W. Wells Award for Excellence in Botany or Horticulture

  • Recognizes work in botany or horticulture at professional or amateur level

    C. Ritchie Bell Award for Natural Resource Conservation Advocacy

  • Recognizes efforts to raise public awareness of environmental issues
  • Recognizes advocacy for the environment
  • Recognizes encouragement of the Society to maintain environmental issues as a major component of activities

Award Categories - Part II (Members and Non-Members):

    H. L. Blomquist Award for Promoting Native Plants

  • Recognizes a business or institution in North Carolina that promotes native plants
  • Recognizes promotion of alternatives to non-native invasive plants
  • Recognizes contribution to NCNPS mission

    Emily H. Allen Award for Landscape Design with Native Plant Material

  • Recognizes a public or private garden within North Carolina
  • Recognizes exemplary use of native plant material
  • Encourages such use in home or business landscapes (residential, business, or organization)

    H. Roland Totten Award for Advancing Knowledge or Conservation of Native Plants

  • Recognizes efforts to advance knowledge of native plants
  • Recognizes advocacy for conservation of plants and their habitats

    Application/Nomination Process

    Nomination Timeline:

  • Nominations accepted until January 1 annually

  • Awards presented at the June annual meeting
  • Nomination Requirements:
    1. Resume: Outlining accomplishments of the nominee
    2. Support Letters: At least 3 letters of support
    - May be from NCNPS members or general public
    - Must be from those familiar with nominee's achievements and activities

    Nomination Flexibility:

  • Nominations may be made for a specific category

  • Nominations may allow the Awards Committee to place the nomination in the most appropriate category
  • Submission:

  • Mail nominations no later than January 1 to:

    Announcement:

  • Selected recipients announced at Annual Picnic in June
