National Speleological Society: Research Grant

The National Speleological Society (NSS) offers Research Grants to its members for cave-related studies in natural and social sciences, as well as the humanities. Proposals can be submitted anytime, with funding decisions made biannually in January and June. Applicants must ensure compliance with ethical standards and legal requirements. Grants aim to promote the scientific study and conservation of caves while encouraging responsible exploration and knowledge sharing in the community.

NOTE: Proposals may be submitted at any time. The RAC will make funding decisions twice annually, in January and June. Proposals should be received at least one month in advance to be considered.
The National Speleological Society (NSS) is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the scientific study of caves and karst; protecting caves and their natural contents through conservation, ownership, stewardship, and public education; and promoting responsible cave exploration and fellowship among those interested in caves.
Research Grants
Research Grants are given to qualified individuals or teams who are members of the NSS by the time the proposal is submitted for research-support in cave-related branches of study. This includes, but is not limited to, natural sciences (e.g., cave biology, geology, paleontology, and hydrology), social sciences (e.g., archaeology), and the humanities (e.g., speleological history). We also welcome interdisciplinary proposals. Grants applications will be evaluated for their potential to generate new information and insights that are suitable for submission to peer-reviewed publications. By accepting a grant, the recipient(s) also accepts his/her responsibility for acknowledging NSS financial support in all publications and public presentations of the research funded.

Eligibility

Ethical standards:Any researcher working on a NSS-funded project assumes the responsibility of complying with all local, state, and federal laws regarding research and collecting permits, anywhere in the world. Researchers will also comply with all ethical standards of their field dealing with issues of academic misconduct.
