National Park Michigan Mobility Challenge (NPMMC)

Focus Areas: Advanced mobility and electrification technologies for Michigan National Parks

Geographic Scope: Four of Michigan's five National Parks:

  • Keweenaw National Historical Park

  • Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

  • River Raisin National Battlefield Park

  • Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
  • Overview

    A competitive challenge issued to the global mobility industry to identify and deploy advanced mobility and electrification technologies in Michigan's National Parks. The State anticipates this Challenge will attract industry investment and talent while improving accessibility and sustainability within Michigan's National Parks.

    Expected Impact: Pilot projects anticipated to relieve parking lot and roadway congestion, increase availability of charging stations, or offer convenient alternatives to private motor vehicle travel.

    Areas of Innovation

    1. Small-Scale Electric Shuttles and Automated Driving Systems (ADS)

  • Multi-passenger transit services (human-operated or ADS-operated)

  • Reduce private motor vehicle trips

  • Alleviate parking and roadway congestion

  • Improve accessibility for persons with disabilities

  • Reduce environmental impact
  • 2. Multimodal Electric Charging Hubs

  • Integrated charging infrastructure in and around National Park gateway communities

  • Support for electric vehicles and electric mobility devices
  • 3. Micromobility

  • Shared micromobility services (e.g., e-bikes, scooters)

  • Enable short "last mile" trips and longer adventures

  • Alternatives to motor vehicle trips
  • Evaluation and Funding

    Grant funding available to support the most promising innovations, affording companies the opportunity to pilot products and services in Michigan's National Parks.

      Supporting Plans

      The Challenge directly supports:
    • MI Healthy Climate Plan - reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving economy-wide carbon neutrality
    • MI Future Mobility Plan - providing safer, greener, and more accessible transportation infrastructure

    3. Submit proposal addressing one or multiple Areas of Innovation
    4. Proposals evaluated for implementation potential
