National Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS) Legacy Award Grant

The National Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS) Legacy Award, established by SHAPE America, honors exemplary contributions to increasing opportunities for women in sports. This annual award recognizes current SHAPE America members who submit impactful proposals related to women's sports, with a monetary prize of $1000. The award will be presented at the National Convention & Exposition, with a special deadline of November 1st. Nominations can include various initiatives aimed at empowering women in sports.

NOTE: This opportunity has two deadlines, the actual due date and the special deadline. The first one reflects the application due date. The second is the date that all other required documents must be uploaded if these were not submitted within the first due date.

National Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS) was founded in 1899 with the mission of increasing opportunities for girls and women in sport. With the re-organization of AAHPERD to SHAPE America, all of the national associations including NAGWS unified as SHAPE America. NAGWS & SHAPE America owned the Wade Trophy and sold the trophy to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). With the sale of the trophy, SHAPE America established the NAGWS Legacy Award.

Eligibility

Award CriteriaCurrent member of SHAPE AmericaSubmitted proposal that honors the National Girls and Women in Sports Legacy and mission of increasing opportunities for girls and women in sport as participants and leadersExamples of proposals include but not limited to: research project related to girls and women in sport; professional development opportunity for female leadership in sport (conference attendance/presentation); graduate school research project; after school program; support of speaker; etc.General RequirementsPosthumous nominations may be made not later than five years after death of the nominee.A person may be a candidate for no more than one award during any one year. In the event that a nomination for one person is received from two or more different nominators and the nominations are for different awards, the nominee shall choose the award for which s/he wishes to be considered.

Ineligibility

Individuals may not receive the same award more than once.Individuals currently employed by SHAPE America are ineligible to be considered as candidates for SHAPE America awards.Individuals currently serving as members of the Recognition Awards Committee are ineligible to be considered as candidates for SHAPE America awards.
