NAA-REF Major Grants

    Purpose

    Major grants fund research and educational projects that meet one or more NAA-REF purposes:
  • The study and understanding of grievance procedures, arbitration process, and other forms of labor and employment dispute resolution and the impact of law on these processes
  • Education and training of persons engaged in resolution of labor-management and employment disputes (lecture programs, symposiums, conferences, training seminars)
  • Preparation and publication of books, symposium materials, articles, and audio-visual materials (videos, websites, CDs) enhancing competence in arbitration and mediation
  • Projects fostering highest standards of integrity, competence, honor, and character in arbitration and dispute resolution
  • Preparation of material keeping arbitrators and students abreast of current research into arbitration process and dispute resolution procedures

    Eligible Project Types

  • Research Proposals: Academic and applied research on arbitration, labor-management relations, and dispute resolution
  • Training/Educational Proposals: Development of courses, training programs, educational materials, symposiums, and conferences

  • Researchers, educators, and organizations in US and Canada
  • Individual scholars and institutional applicants
  • Collaborators and co-applicants welcome

    Key Information

  • NAA-REF is a small foundation; applicants should not expect full funding
  • Applicants expected to provide significant portion of their own funding
  • Review process includes committee review and full NAA-REF Board approval

Application Process for Major Grants

#### Submission

1. Format and Submission:
- Submit proposals in Word or PDF format
- Email to: researchandeducationfoundation@gmail.com
- Copy NAA-REF President Rosemary Pye at: pye.arbitrator@gmail.com
- Submit at least one month prior to quarterly board meetings (March, June, September, December) for committee review

#### Required Information for All Major Grant Applications

2. Contact Information:
- Names, affiliations, mailing addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers of applicant(s) and collaborators
- Resume or curriculum vitae of applicant(s)

3. NAA-REF Purpose Identification:
- Identify which NAA-REF purpose(s) the proposal meets (threshold requirement)

4. Budget:
- Provide detailed budget showing specific expenditures
- Specify exactly what NAA-REF funding is requested
- If applicable, describe how this fits into any larger proposal

5. Other Funding Sources:
- Specify amount of budget to be supplied by applicant
- List all other funding sources and approximate amounts from each
- If no other sources: Describe efforts made to secure other funding and reasons for absence

6. Project Summary:
- 200-word summary stating:
- Project objective
- Significance of proposed project
- How the end product will be used

7. Full Project Description:
- Complete explanation providing reviewers with full picture of proposed research design
- Include:
- Proposal's purpose and value
- What will be done
- How it will be done
- Who will do it
- When it will be done
- What the end product will be
- Target audience
- Marketing plans
- Dissemination procedure for results

8. Timeline:
- Proposed timeline for each stage of project
- Tentative completion date for each stage
- Final completion date for end product
- (Note: REF releases money based on grantee reports at each project stage)

9. Research Proposal Requirements:
- Introduction: Response to the following (indicate N/A if not applicable):
- How does your research relate to the mission of the NAA?
- Have you completed a literature review? (with well-documented citations and academic resources)
- What is your rationale for the research?
- What is your goal in conducting this research?
- What is/are your hypothesis(es)?
- How will your research advance knowledge in light of state of knowledge in literature?
- Clear timeline for various research aspects (preliminary literature review, distributing surveys, interviewing subjects, completion date)
- Detailed budget (travel, research assistants, online resources, etc.)
- Have you sought other sources of funding? From what sources? What has been their response?
- How do you plan to disseminate research findings? (article, conference presentation, etc.)
- What previous research have you conducted?
- Did prior research lead to articles or presentations? If so, list them.
- Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) be used in research, writing, or any other aspect? If so, how?

10. If Conducting Interviews:
- Provide copy of interview questions
- Identify subjects and explain how/why they were chosen
- Determine if human subjects review is appropriate for your institution/agency
- If yes, confirm receipt of Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval or equivalent
- Identify who will conduct interviews and how they will be trained
- Describe procedures for pre-testing questions and duration
- Specify means for conducting interviews (telephone, video, in person)

11. If Distributing Questionnaire:
- Provide copy of questionnaire
- Describe procedure for pre-testing questionnaire (beta testing) prior to wide distribution
- Explain how questionnaires will be distributed (mail, email, etc.)
- Identify who will analyze results
- Describe statistical analysis to be conducted (descriptive or inferential statistics)

#### Additional Information Required for Educational or Training Proposals

12. Educational/Training Proposal Requirements:
- Detailed description of the education program and/or materials being developed
- The need that the program and/or material will fill
- Commitments obtained or to be obtained from authors, speakers, partners, collaborators, or co-sponsors
- Target audience for the project
- Marketing plan to publicize the education program/materials to intended audience

Conditions for Receiving Funding

  • Written Report: In addition to progress reports required to receive funding installments, provide written report at conclusion of project including:
  • - For research projects: main findings - For educational projects: description of activities and accomplishments
  • Summary for NAA-REF Website: Provide abstract/executive summary of any publication resulting from grant; allow REF to use for marketing purposes and include on NAA-REF webpages
  • Training/Educational Materials: Provide brief summary of project for NAA-REF marketing and webpages
  • Acknowledgement: Any publications, program/conference handouts, videos, PowerPoints, or other materials resulting from research/project must prominently acknowledge NAA-REF funding
  • Publication Rights: NAA-REF reserves right to publish all or parts of each research report in Proceedings of NAA Annual Meeting and include links to paper or video on REF webpages
  • NAA Meeting Presentation: May be asked to present project at annual spring meeting of NAA or at NAA regional meetings
  • Return Unspent Funds: Any unspent funds received for authorized expenditures must be returned to NAA-REF
