The Steinkamp Fund supports research on the biology of Colorado's rare native plants. Published awards are $1,000 each — a 2015 award to a first-year MS biology student at UNC Greeley for population structure and taxonomic synonymy work on Phacelia submutica using ITS and NADH sequences; two 2018 awards, one to Ronald Abbott for 'Shoot Production in the Rare Alpine Calciphile Saussurea weberi' and one to Jennifer Ackerfield (Assistant Curator and PhD candidate at Colorado State University) for 'The Evolution, Identification, and Protection of Colorado's Rare Thistles'. More than one grant can be awarded in a single year.
