Mission: Fund support services and outreach for people affected by breast cancer within the Hudson Valley, New York.

Geographic Scope: Nine counties in New York State: Columbia County, Dutchess County, Putnam County, Westchester County, Rockland County, Orange County, Ulster County, Greene County, and Sullivan County.

Status: Active; established March 2004 as a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Funding Areas

Grants are awarded in the following areas:
• Breast cancer education
• Educational outreach to special populations
• Support programs (including complementary medicine programs)
• Financial aid for social support and ancillary services

Eligibility Requirements

• Applicants must be a US nonprofit (federally tax-exempt) organization
• Nonprofit organizations, known educational institutions (college or university), government agencies, and Indian tribes are eligible
• Services must be provided in the nine counties served by Miles of Hope
• Project must be specific to breast health and/or breast cancer

Funding Restrictions

• No capital campaigns will be funded
• Equipment costs, if applicable, may not exceed 30% of direct costs and must be used exclusively on this project
• Salaries, if requested, are for personnel related to this project only and not the general work of the employee

Funding Timeline

• Grants are typically awarded during two annual funding cycles
• Award notifications made late February and late July
• Additional applications may be considered on a case-by-case basis as funds are available

Background

Miles of Hope was started by Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok in 2004. To date, the Foundation has granted over $4.0 million to programs and services for people affected by breast cancer.
