Medical Student Scholar Program

Status: Currently Closed (2025 application deadline passed; 2026 application due October 20, 2025)

Award Type: Travel scholarship and educational opportunity

Geographic Scope: US and Canada

Purpose

Provides medical students with an immersive experience to learn about interventional radiology at an early stage in their medical careers.

    Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a medical student within the U.S. or Canada
  • Must be an SIR medical student member
  • Medical students doing a research year (not yet graduated) are eligible
  • Ineligible: Prior SIR Medical Student Travel Scholarship recipients
  • Ineligible: Those who have served or currently serve as members of the Medical Student General Council
  • Ineligible: Those invited/accepted to speak at a general session (not scientific session) or medical student/resident programming at SIR 2026

Post-Award Requirements

Upon returning home, scholarship recipients must submit a 500-word essay about their experience, which may be published in part or in its entirety in society publications or on the SIR website. Once the final essay is received, scholarship recipients will receive their $1,000 stipends via wire transfer.

Application Requirements

#### Required Materials (submitted within online application)

1. Up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV)

2. Four Short Essay Questions (250 words or less each):
- In 250 words or less, describe how IR could be grown to help underserved communities
- In 250 words or less, describe your understanding of interventional radiology
- In 250 words or less, describe what you hope to gain by attending the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting
- In 250 words or less, what challenge(s) do you see IR facing in the next 10 years and how to overcome them?

3. Optional Letter of Recommendation
- From an attending physician (does not have to be an interventional radiologist)
- After submitting the online scholar program application, the receipt will include a link to send to your attending physician to submit the optional letter of recommendation

#### Post-Meeting Requirements
