Longwood Foundation Grant

The Longwood Foundation, established in 1937, supports nonprofit organizations in Delaware and Kennett Square. It seeks to enhance community quality of life by funding proposals that align with local missions. Organizations requesting over $500,000 must have a pre-meeting prior to application submission. The Foundation encourages innovative, impactful proposals that drive growth and strengthen nonprofit efforts. Responsive philanthropy is key, allowing nonprofits to present their most significant needs for community betterment.

The Longwood Foundation was founded in 1937 by Pierre S. du Pont, initially to support the operation of Longwood Gardens and the funding of various community projects.
Mr. du Pont’s personal philanthropy long preceded the formation of the Foundation.
We welcome applications from organizations seeking to improve the quality of life and future of the state of Delaware and/or the Kennett Square area (within a four-mile radius of Longwood Gardens).
We meet our vision when nonprofits in our region meet their respective missions. Therefore, our grantmaking is geared towards helping a nonprofit get closer to their mission and goals. We are looking for catalytic proposals – those that help a nonprofit grow, strengthen, or improve their efforts and impact.
In general, we choose to practice “responsive” philanthropy, which means that we assume we don’t know the best way to improve our region and therefore we welcome nonprofits to submit requests most important to them and the communities they serve.

Eligibility

The Foundation accepts grant requests from nonprofit organizations located in and/or benefiting the state of Delaware and within a four-mile radius of Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

Ineligibility

Organizations that have previously applied are asked not to re-approach the Longwood Foundation with a funding request within two years of a previous request, regardless of whether the proposal was approved or declined.
