LG&E and KU's Plant for the Planet Grant

Program Background: Plant for the Planet is modeled after the United Nations Environment Program's Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign. The purpose is to bring individuals, communities and businesses together to collectively plant over one billion trees worldwide each year.

Focus: The program is designed to encourage nonprofit organizations and local government agencies to bolster their tree programs each year.

Geographic Scope: Louisville, Kentucky area

Award Amount: $5,000 per grant

What Gets Funded:

  • Tree and shrub planting projects

  • Native vegetation restoration

  • Areas cleared of invasive species (such as bush honeysuckle)
  • Olmsted Parks Conservancy History:

  • Received grant for third consecutive year as of 2012

  • 2012: $5,000 grant to plant 400 trees and shrubs in Seneca Park at Pewee Reese and Cherokee Gardens Drive

  • 2013: Planted $40,000 worth of trees over four years with LG&E and KU matching gifts; planted along 1500-foot stretch adjacent to I-64 near Seneca Golf Course with 75 canopy trees (yellowwood, tulip, white and red oak, black gum)
