Legal Empowerment Leadership Course

Status: Past program (3rd annual offering in 2017)

Description: A comprehensive course to cultivate a global cadre of leaders committed to legal empowerment with shared understanding of field history, methodology, and evidence. The course focuses on peer-to-peer learning through small group work and in-depth exploration of key themes.

Location: Budapest

Theme: "Law and Organizing" (for 3rd annual offering)

Course Focus Areas:

  • History of the global movement for legal empowerment

  • Intersection of legal empowerment and community organizing

  • Role of grassroots legal advocates in systemic change and service delivery
  • Target Participants:

  • Exceptional paralegals and leaders of civil society organizations running or wishing to run legal empowerment programs

  • Parliamentary leaders and government officials (ministries of justice or development, centralized planning units, NHRIs)

  • Development agency representatives working on legal empowerment at international or country level

  • Academics and researchers interested in working with legal empowerment programs
  • Award Amount:

  • Limited number of competitive scholarships covering travel, accommodation, and full tuition cost

  • Full cost of participation (non-scholarship): EUR 2,000 (does not include travel and accommodation)

  • Note: Scholarships not available for applicants from donor institutions
  • Collaborating Organizations: CEU's School of Public Policy (SPP), Open Society Justice Initiative, Namati, Robert L. Bernstein Institute for Human Rights at NYU
