  • Program Purpose:
    Expand LEAH STEM education program to provide opportunities for high school students to pursue careers as leaders in biomedical research. Addresses underrepresentation of Black scientists in NIH-funded research (only 1% of NIH research award recipients are Black scientists as of 2016).

    Eligible Participants:

  • Boston and Cambridge public high school students

  • Focus on minority students
  • Program Components:
    Two-year support track including:

  • Training in biology lab skills through 4-week lab experience at MIT (as rising juniors)

  • STEM teaching and mentorship for elementary school students through LEAH program

  • Summer research internships throughout Boston's research laboratories (as rising seniors)

  • College admissions counseling through LEAH

  • Exposure to biomedical research careers
  • Program Goals:
    Provide minority students with solid foundation needed to continue science education in college and beyond, addressing systemic underrepresentation in biomedical research.
