Summary

The LASA Bursaries provide financial support for members of the Laboratory Animal Science Association to attend relevant events throughout the year. Particularly aimed at early-career scientists and those with limited funds, these bursaries will prioritize applications for the 2023 annual conference, marking LASA's 60th anniversary. Applications are open to LASA members engaged in laboratory animal science, ensuring a focus on the welfare and care of laboratory animals.

Overview

NOTE: LASA bursaries can be applied for at any time of the year and for any event considered relevant to LASA’s mission statement. About LASA The Laboratory Animal Science Association, LASA, was founded in 1963 by a consortium of industrial, university, ministry and research council representatives – a breadth of interest which is still typical of the LASA membership today. Laboratory animal science seeks to ensure the provision and best use of the most appropriate animal models – including derived materials such as organs, tissues and cellular components – for medical, veterinary and other scientific purposes. LASA has signed the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research to signal the Association’s support for the principles of openness and transparency. We encourage our members to consider how they can be more open about their work and take opportunities to engage with the public about the role of animals in science. Our policy on the use of animals in research aligns with our organisational aims and is endorsed by LASA members. Bursaries When LASA finances permit, it is the intention of LASA Council to consider applications for bursaries to attend meetings, conferences or for other related travel. LASA bursaries can be applied for at any time of the year and for any event considered relevant to LASA’s mission statement. Bursaries are available for persons engaged in laboratory animal science and who are current LASA members. Animal technicians, post-graduate students and others for whom funds may be limited are especially encouraged to apply. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of LASA, and we wish to maximise attendance at our annual conference to all those with an interest in laboratory animal science, medicine, and welfare. We are particularly keen to encourage early-career scientists to register for this meeting, therefore LASA bursaries in 2023 will be prioritised for our annual conference. Consequently, for this year, we will only consider bursary applications for other meetings under exceptional circumstances.

Eligibility

We've imported the main document for this grant to give you an overview. You can learn more about this opportunity by visiting the funder's website. Members of the Laboratory Animal Science Association may apply for LASA bursaries for any event considered relevant to LASA’s mission statement. Early-career scientists, animal technicians, postgraduate students and others for whom funds may be limited are especially encouraged to apply.Bursaries are available for meetings and travel, both within and outside the country of normal residence of the applicant. A substantial part of the activity must be devoted to science relating to the use, care and/or welfare of laboratory animals, rather than a specific scientific discipline. LASA would rarely fund an application to present data from animal-based experimental studies unless there is a clear laboratory animal science or welfare component: instead the relevant society or learned body should be approached.  Applications will be considered for the LASA Annual Conference or LASA Specialist Section meetings, but preference will be given to first-time attendees and/ or those taking an active part in the meeting.Applicants should normally be resident in the UK. Applications from other countries will be considered only where there is no source of local funding to support activities relating to care and/or welfare of laboratory animals.
