About The American Association of Avian Pathologists is an international association whose mission is to promote scientific knowledge to enhance the health, well–being, and productivity of poultry to provide safe and abundant food for the world. Established in 1957, it is open to anyone who is engaged in some phase of avian diseases. Each year AAAP conducts a scientific program and symposium where the latest findings and issues regarding diseases in poultry are shared and discussed. AAAP also publishes Avian Diseases, a quarterly, international journal for original basic or clinical research from various disciplines including microbiology, immunology and pathology. In addition, AAAP publishes many educational materials on avian health including Diseases of Poultry and the Avian Disease Manual. AAAP committees and interest groups offer members a forum for discussion and action on specific poultry topics and issues. Through the AAAP Foundation, scholarships and awards are given each year to support those who are striving for careers in poultry medicine and acknowledge outstanding achievement in the area of poultry medicine. Kenneth Eskelund Preceptorship Poultry Medicine Training Program The AAAP Foundation is proud to offer a preceptorship poultry medicine training program to qualified veterinary students. The purpose of the preceptorships is to enable interested veterinary students to expand their education, training, and veterinary skills through practical experience in their specialized field. The AAAP Foundation has solicited the cooperation of its members in establishing a variety of training sites including universities, diagnostic laboratories, poultry production companies and poultry breeding companies. The Foundation annually offers individual awards of up to $1,500.00 to veterinary students to help them defray housing, living and travel expenses incurred while attending the externship. Students arrange their preceptorships under the auspices of their veterinary medical schools. The preceptorship program was the brainchild of Dr. Kenneth H. Eskelund who launched the program in 1988 and donated generously for years to a fund that still supports the program. Recently generous donations by companies and poultry associations have allowed the preceptorship program to expand. Recipients of a AAAP Foundation Preceptorship Poultry Medicine Training Program scholarship will receive one of the following: Kenneth H. Eskelund Preceptorship Scholarship Aviagen Preceptorship Scholarship Association of Veterinarians in Egg Production (AVEP) Preceptorship Scholarship Alltech Preceptorship Scholarship Huvepharma Preceptorship Scholarship Southern Poultry Research Group, Inc.
