Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) - Scholarships and Awards

Overview: The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium offers significant scholarships and awards to students who compete in regional and national symposia. Many university sponsors who conduct the regional symposia contribute additional scholarships, cash awards, and other prizes. The availability of these additional awards, type of award, and value vary by region.

Purpose:

  • Recognize achievement and interest in research pursuits

  • Provide financial support for undergraduate education

  • Foster academic interest in science and engineering careers
  • Award Categories and Amounts

    #### For Teachers (48 awards)

  • $500 award to one teacher at each of the 48 regionals, honoring the individual teacher's and his or her school's contributions to advancing student participation in research
  • #### For Regional Finalists

  • Expense-paid trip to the National JSHS, awarded to five finalists at each regional symposium (National Symposium brings together over 360 participants)

  • Invitation to present original research investigation at the National JSHS, awarded to 1st place finalist at each regional

  • $4,000 undergraduate tuition scholarship, awarded to one 1st place finalist at each regional (scholarship payable upon matriculation)
  • #### For National Finalists

  • 1st Place: Eight $16,000 undergraduate tuition scholarships (including the regional award, a total of $20,000, payable at $5,000 per year for 4 years)

  • 2nd Place: Eight $6,000 undergraduate tuition scholarships (including the regional award, a total of $10,000, payable at minimum $4,000 per year for two years and $2,000 in year three)

  • 3rd Place: Eight $2,000 undergraduate tuition scholarships (including the regional award, a total of $6,000, payable at $4,000 in year one and $2,000 in year two)

  • Expense-paid trip to the London International Youth Science Forum for 1st place finalists (exchange program with over 400 participants from 60 nations); runner-ups are alternate winners
