Award Size: $5,000 - $10,000 college scholarships
Background: Established in 1994 by the late Jonathan R. Lax, an entrepreneur, inventor, and proud gay man who fought for civil rights for all LGBTQ people. The fund encourages gay men to pursue higher education, contribute to society through activism, and be out about their sexual orientation.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be gay men AND meet one of the following:
Option 1:
- Graduated from a high school in Philadelphia region (Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia counties)
- Enrolled at an accredited college, graduate, or professional school in the United States
Option 2:
- Graduated from high school outside the region
- Enrolled at an accredited college, graduate, or professional school in the Philadelphia region
Scholarship Committee
The Jonathan Lax Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to eligible scholars.
Recent Scholars (2023, 2022, 2021, 2020)
Documented scholarship recipients pursuing degrees in:
- Social work and healthcare
- Nursing and public health
- Medicine and healthcare administration
- Education and sociology
- Business and international relations
- Arts and communications
- Nursing and psychiatric health
Many scholars are active in LGBTQ+ advocacy and community service.
