John J. Snyder Fund for Historic Preservation Grant Program

The John J. Snyder Fund for Historic Preservation supports the restoration and maintenance of historical structures in Lancaster and Cumberland counties. With grants ranging from $20,000 to $114,600, funding is available for essential repairs such as roof replacements and electrical system updates. This initiative aims to preserve local heritage for future generations. Eligible applicants include community benefit organizations with a current 501(c)(3) designation, ensuring that grants are directed towards impactful projects.

John J. Snyder, Jr. Fund
The John J. Snyder, Jr. Fund for Historic Preservation is a distinct fund of our Passion Grants. It supports the restoration, maintenance, and repair of historical structures in Lancaster and Cumberland counties. Grant funds may be used for many of the “unglamorous things” necessary to sustain a documented historical structure owned by a community benefit organization, so that it may be preserved for future generations. Project examples include repointing, roof repair and replacement, electrical system repair and replacement, general restoration, maintenance, and repair.
Previously funded projects include the restoration of the “Griddle & Grind” historical building in Ephrata and the renovation of buildings occupied by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens and his housekeeper, Lydia Hamilton Smith, to create the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History & Democracy.
Grants range from $20,000 to $117,000.

Eligibility

Funding will be awarded for project execution only, not for feasibility studies or other planning purposes.Eligibility for funding is determined based on due diligence and assessment of the following:Serve Lancaster County* residents without discriminationCurrent 501(c)(3) designation from the IRSCurrent 501(c)(3)** designation from the IRS
Registered with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations unless otherwise exempt per the Institutions of Purely Public Charity Act
Complete IRS Form 990 Annually
Annual Audit or a financial review by an independent CPA within the last 12 months
In good standing with all existing awards and contracts with the Lancaster County Community Foundation
May not receive grants from the same fund for more than 3 consecutive years
Provide organizational Non-Discrimination Policy meeting all federal requirements as it applies to your type of organization (FAQs)

Ineligibility
