Overview

About ASOR The American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to initiate, encourage, and support research into, and public understanding of, the history and cultures of the Near East and wider Mediterranean world, from the earliest times. ASOR is apolitical and has no religious affiliation. Grants for Archaeological Projects In the summer of 2007, ASOR renewed its emphasis on providing funding grants and fellowships that allow individuals to participate in excavations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Since 2007, ASOR has awarded more than $986,000 to 740 researchers and students through scholarships for fieldwork participants, grants for archaeological projects, research fellowships for members, and membership and annual meeting scholarships. The grants below support archaeological projects and project directors. Joe D. Seger Project Grant ASOR plans to award two Seger Project Grants of $2,500 each this year. Established in 2016 through generous gifts made by an anonymous donor and by friends and students of Joe D. Seger, The Joe D. Seger Excavation Grants are designed to support ASOR-affiliated excavation projects. Joe Seger has been a part of the ASOR family since the 1960’s, and he has served in numerous leadership positions. Notably, Seger served six years as ASOR President (1996-2003). He is a recipient of ASOR’s highest award, the Richard Scheuer Medal. Today, he continues his service through membership on the ASOR Board and ASOR’s Executive Committee. The Seger Endowment provides modest grants to worthy field projects that are ASOR-affiliated, particularly to newer and smaller projects, to help them get started, and to discrete components of larger projects that can be completed with an award. The endowment funds are intended both to support a particular need for an archaeological project and to help the PI and the project secure matching funds.
