Joanna Foundation Grant

The Joanna Foundation offers grants primarily to organizations that are tax-exempt and focused on community betterment within South Carolina. Established in 1945, the foundation supports health, education, and other improvements in areas like Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties, as well as Newberry and Joanna. Grants typically range from $1,000 to $3,000, with larger amounts available for exceptional projects. Organizations may apply once per calendar year.

Note: The Joanna Foundation is a two-part process. The first requirement is to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI shown above). After reviewing the LOIs, we invite a limited number of full proposals.
The Joanna Foundation has three funding cycles per year. Hours for submission are 9 AM to 5 PM on the designated date. Early or late submissions will not be accepted. A maximum of 20 LOIs are accepted for review per cycle.
Our Purpose and Mission
The Foundation is “dedicated to community betterment … promoting the causes of health and education, and other worthwhile improvements.”
Our purpose is to support organizations and programs that strengthen community capacity and enhance individual involvement in achieving a better quality of life. The primary beneficiaries are residents of the following areas in South Carolina: Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties as well as the communities of Newberry and Joanna, SC.
Types of Support
The Joanna Foundation will consider requests for general operating support or to help launch a new program, support specific projects conducted by the organization, match funds to leverage the impact of a challenge grant, and/or advance capital campaigns.
Grant Amount
There is no set limit that an organization may request. Most grants made by The Joanna Foundation are in the range of $1,000 to $3,000 for one year. Larger grants in the $5,000 to $10,000 range are less common and grants exceeding $10,000 are exceptional.
The Foundation will consider requests for:

• Seed money
• Special projects
• Matching funds
• General operations
• Technical/administrative support
• Capital campaigns

Eligibility

The Joanna Foundation makes grants only to organizations qualifying as tax-exempt under the Internal Revenue Code and not classified as private foundations.Funding focuses on specific areas in South Carolina.Eligible organizations should be located within or demonstrate significant impact in at least one of the following areas: Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties and the communities of Newberry and Joanna, SC.Organizations may submit one pre-proposal per calendar year.Organizations that receive a grant must skip a calendar year before submitting a new pre-proposal.For example, an organization receiving a grant at any time during 2015 would be eligible to apply again in 2017.

Ineligibility

The Foundation discourages recurring-type grants and does not accept requests for multi-year commitments.The Foundation does not make loans or provide grants, scholarships or fellowships to individuals.
