JICUF Global Scholarship Program - Syrian Scholars Initiative

Purpose: To support Syrian refugees in accordance with JICUF's commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Christian values.

Award Type: Full scholarship for degree-seeking undergraduate study at ICU.

Number of Awards: Two full scholarships annually (starting 2018).

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be a Syrian refugee currently residing in Turkey
• Seeking degree-seeking undergraduate study at ICU

Geographic Scope

• Target population: Syrian refugees in Turkey
• Study location: International Christian University (ICU), Japan

Background

Created in response to the Syrian Civil War, described as the biggest geopolitical crisis of the 21st century (as of March 2017). The initiative addresses the educational disruption faced by millions of Syrian youth due to the war. This is the first example of a privately funded scholarship program for Syrian refugees in a Japanese university.
