Summary
The J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship, established by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 1938, supports graduate students pursuing experimental hydraulics research. With a focus on practical experiments to advance knowledge in hydraulic flow, this fellowship is awarded to up to two deserving members annually, aiding in tuition and living expenses. Preference is given to Associate Members, fostering the education of future leaders in civil engineering.Overview
American Society of Civil Engineers The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents more than 160,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest national civil engineering society. ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine – the built environment – while protecting and restoring the natural environment. Through the expertise of its active membership, ASCE is a leading provider of technical and professional conferences and continuing education, the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering content, and an authoritative source for codes and standards that protect the public. The Society advances civil engineering technical specialties through nine dynamic institutes and leads with its many professional- and public-focused programs. J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship This fellowship was established by the Board of Direction of the Society in 1938 and was made possible by J. Waldo Smith, past Vice President and Hon.M.ASCE, who bequeathed funds to the Society. Rules The J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship may be presented annually to not more than two graduate students, who will use the fellowship for tuition, research and living expenses. The purpose of the fellowship is to further the education of worthy civil engineering graduate students engaged in the study of experimental hydraulics. Under the provisions adopted by the Board of Direction, the scope of the fellowship should be restricted to research in the field of experimental hydraulics as distinguished from that of purely “theoretical hydraulics.” To this end, emphasis is to be placed on practical experiments designed and executed for the purpose of advancing knowledge with respect to the laws of hydraulic flow, rather than to the type of research which proceeds on the theory of mathematical based on assumptions of unknown validity. The essence of the purpose of the research is to test the assumptions which are currently made, and also to develop a better understanding of fluid flow.Eligibility
