IDL: Hazard Fuels Reduction Grants

The Hazard Fuels Reduction Grants, funded by the USDA Forest Service, aim to mitigate fire risks on non-federal, non-industrial forest lands. Projects must focus on reducing hazard fuels within 1.5 miles of federal fire mitigation efforts. Key aspects include a federal adjacency requirement, targeted educational initiatives, and no match funding requirements, although leveraging funding is encouraged. This program is designed to complement existing fire management strategies.

Hazard Fuels Reduction (HFR) grants are funded by the USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry branch, and are intended to fund fire risk mitigation treatments on non-federal, non-industrial forest lands. Projects must seek to modify fire behavior through the treatment/reduction of hazard fuels and must take place within 1.5 miles of a federal project with similar fire mitigation objectives. This program is very similar to the Western States Fire Managers (WSFM) grant program with the following differences:

• Federal project adjacency requirement (as mentioned above)
• Education components of the project must be specific to the project area – no general education
• No match funding requirement (leverage funding is highly encouraged)
