Overview

Mission The primary activities of the Foundation are education, advocacy, technical and easement advice, preservation grants, recognition awards and the historic plaque program. Since its founding, HAF has helped protect and preserve hundreds of irreplaceable buildings and artifacts associated with the city of Alexandria. Grants Individuals, non-profit associations and organizations, and private non-profit and public museums may apply for grant awards from the Historic Alexandria Preservation Fund. In order to apply for a grant, an applicant must be a member of Historic Alexandria Foundation. Projects eligible for consideration include, but are not limited to, the following: Restoration, repair, maintenance or improvement of historic properties in the City of Alexandria, which are open to the public or serve a public function.Conservation of artifacts in private non-profit or public museum collections within the city of Alexandria.Historical, architectural, or archaeological research of a particular structure, property, site or district which may enhance the goals of preservation in the city.Scholarly research conducted on Alexandria's architectural or cultural history. Individual grants will be awarded at the discretion of Historic Alexandria Foundation, which administers the Fund, based on the nature, purpose, and merits of the project proposal. Funding The typical grant award is up to $5,000, but larger awards have been bestowed to projects judged to be of high need or merit. Grant awards in some instances will be required to be matched by a similar amount of money raised from other sources. The amount and date of the award will be determined by HAF. Grantees will be notified by U.S. mail by an officer of the Fund.
