HBCU-UP Program (Historically Black Colleges and Universities - Undergraduate Program)

Geographic Scope: Albany State University (GA, US)

Award Amount: $1,000 to entering ASU freshmen STEM majors participating in two-year program ($500 plus full room and board for summer program + $500 educational allowance upon Fall registration)

Program Objectives:

1. Reduce the attrition rate of students in gateway courses by 10%
2. Increase the number of STEM students entering graduate and professional schools
3. Provide faculty development opportunities for STEM faculty
4. Increase the number of entering freshmen at Albany State University who declare STEM majors by 5-10%
5. Increase the number of transfer students in STEM major from 2-year colleges by 5%
6. Increase the research capabilities and experiences of STEM students and faculty

Program Components:

• Two-week summer intensive program (starts June 24, 2018 mentioned in materials)
• Development of critical thinking skills
• Study skills enhancement
• Mathematics skill refinement
• Science-related field trips
• Research exposure
• Writing skills improvement
• Campus orientation

Post-Summer Support:

• Two-year cohort system with faculty mentors
• Specially redesigned mathematics and science courses taken together
• Learning community structure to support STEM studies adaptation
• Mentoring of next cohort of students after first year

Eligibility Requirements:

• U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Enrolled at Albany State University as incoming freshman
• Declared major in: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science
• Meet specific criteria for SAT scores and high school GPA

Application Requirements Checklist:

2. Submit to Admissions Office:
   • High school transcripts
   • High school GPA
   • SAT and/or ACT scores
3. Send two letters of recommendation from high school math or science teachers to: hbcuup@asurams.edu

Qualification Criteria:

• Must meet specific SAT score requirements
• Must meet specific high school GPA requirements
• Majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science
