Overview

GVEA Scholarships

Overview: Since 2002, GVEA has awarded over $668,000 in scholarship funds to students in Interior Alaska. Scholarship funds come from unclaimed capital credits and have no impact on member rates.

Geographic Scope: GVEA service territory (Interior Alaska)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicant or member of applicant's immediate family must be a GVEA member

  • Must receive electric power from GVEA at principal residence

  • Graduating seniors from high schools, correspondence study, or distance education programs within GVEA's service area (for some scholarships)
  • Scholarship Types and Award Amounts:

      1. Academic Degree Scholarship

    • Amount: $16,000
    • Number Awarded: 1 per year
    • Duration: 4-year scholarship
    • Eligibility:
    • - Graduating senior from high school, correspondence study, or distance education program within GVEA service area - Pursuing 4-year bachelor's degree at any University of Alaska campus - Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.5

      2. Academic Scholarship

    • Amount: $3,500
    • Number Awarded: 3 per year
    • Duration: Nonrenewable
    • Eligibility:
    • - Graduating senior from high school, correspondence study, or distance education program within GVEA service area - Pursuing 4-year bachelor's degree at accredited school - Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0

      3. Continuing Education Scholarship

    • Amount: $3,000
    • Number Awarded: 3 per year
    • Duration: Nonrenewable
    • Eligibility:
    • - Current year graduating high school seniors NOT eligible - Enrolled or accepted as part-time (at least 6 credit hours per semester or 4 hours per quarter) or full-time student - Pursuing bachelor's or master's degree at accredited school - Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 with 12+ credits completed

      4. Career and Technical Education Scholarship

    • Amount: $3,500
    • Number Awarded: 1 per year
    • Duration: Nonrenewable
    • Eligibility:
    • - Enrolled or accepted as part-time (at least 6 credit hours per semester or 4 hours per quarter) or full-time student - Pursuing recognized license, certificate, or Associate degree (2 years or less) - Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0

      5. Youth Rally Scholarship

    • Description: Weeklong leadership camp for high school juniors and seniors
    • Number Awarded: 2 students per year
    • Eligibility:
    • - Current high school sophomores or juniors - Enrolled in high school, correspondence study, or distance education program within GVEA service area
    • Coverage: All travel, lodging, and meal expenses covered by GVEA
    • Location: ICUA Youth Rally in Nampa, Idaho
    • Application Period: December 1 – February 1

    Selection Process: Blind-copy selection process conducted by Scholarship Committee in April
