Overview

The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) was established in 1919 for the purpose of promoting interest in the study of mammals. ASM is deeply committed to training future generations of mammalogists. This includes offering multiple sources of financial support to students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career investigators engaged in research on mammals. It also includes travel funds to promote student presentations at the Society’s annual meeting. Graduate Student Fellowships These awards recognize students with sustained records of outstanding research productivity as well as substantial engagement in ASM. As a result, although there is no formal requirement regarding the academic stage of applicants, these fellowships are typically given to students who are nearing the completion of their graduate degrees. However, recipients must be enrolled as a graduate student during the forthcoming fall semester to be eligible for these award. Albert R. and Alma Shadle Fellowship in Mammalogy A single graduate fellowship in mammalogy is provided annually by the Albert R. and Alma Shadle Endowment Fund. The award is made by the Buffalo Foundation at the recommendation of the Grants-in-Aid Committee of ASM. Generally, the award is approximately $4,000. The fellowship is intended to promote a professional career in mammalogy by allowing the recipient greater freedom to pursue research, but is not a grant in support of a specific research project.
