  • Master's Level Graduate Students:

  • Humanities and social sciences disciplines

  • Earning certificate or working on project in German Studies

  • Nominated by supervising professor

  • Completed two years of college-level German language studies

  • Minimum three courses in German Studies
  • PhD Students:

  • Humanities and social science disciplines

  • In process of preparing dissertation proposals on modern German topics

  • Nominated by principal advisor

  • Dissertation proposals must NOT have been formally accepted one year or more before deadline

  • Program designed for exploratory research, not to supplement regular dissertation field work

  • Completed two years of college-level German language studies

  • Minimum three courses in German Studies
  • Citizenship/Residency Requirements:

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents, OR

  • International students enrolled in degree program at US or Canadian college/university and living in US or Canada for minimum six months by application deadline
  • Application Requirements:

  • Nomination by supervising professor or principal advisor

  • Full-time enrollment at nominating US or Canadian college/university

    1. Student Obtains Nomination
    - Work with supervising professor (for undergraduates and master's students) or principal advisor (for PhD students)
    - Professor/advisor must nominate and support application

    - Faculty endorsement letter
    - Academic transcripts
    - CV or resume
    - German language proficiency documentation
