Geographic Scope: West Georgia Technical College - Franklin site

Purpose:
Grant for architectural design of facility upgrades for future expansion of the College's Welding Lab at the Franklin site.

Project Details:

  • Current welding lab: 3,000 square feet (reconstructed in 2011)

  • Proposed expansion: Additional 700 square feet

  • Expansion features: New covered, outdoor area for grinding and cutting

  • Expected impact: Add capacity for 36 additional students per semester
  • Focus Area:
    Welding and Joining Technology program - an associate's degree program designed to prepare students for careers in the welding industry. Program develops academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement.

    Service Area:
    Supports Heard County School System's dual enrollment program and addresses growing workforce demand in the region for highly skilled welding employees.

    Funder Rationale:
    Georgia Power is excited to partner with West Georgia Tech to provide educational resources in conjunction with the Heard County College and Career Academy to enhance students' skills and provide greater opportunities as they enter the workforce upon graduation.
