Overview

About Us The Galpin Society has an international membership of people from all walks of life with an interest in musical instruments. The Galpin Society Journal (GSJ) is published annually for members at the end of the subscription year, and our online newsletter is produced three times a year. Conferences are normally held in the UK in alternate years. Founded in 1946, the Society commemorates Canon Francis W. Galpin (1858-1945). A much-loved parish priest, Galpin had a lifelong interest in studying, collecting, playing and sometimes making musical instruments. His enthusiasm is reflected in the Society’s broad remit to promote the study of all kinds of musical instrument. Research Grant The purpose of the Galpin Society research grant is to assist the recipient in undertaking research into the construction, development, manufacture and use of musical instruments, in the anticipation that the resulting work will be suitable for inclusion in The Galpin Society Journal. It may also be used to cover the costs associated with obtaining illustrations for an article accepted for publication in the GSJ. The award is made at the beginning of the academic year and the recipient will normally be expected to produce a paper suitable for inclusion in the GSJ within two years.
